Why Prince Andrew Has Surrendered His Official Honors – and What It Means for the Monarchy
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, the king's brother has declared that he will be giving up his royal titles, including his dukedom. Here is an overview of what was revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Did the Prince Announced?
After previously withdrawn as a working royal in 2019, the prince has currently decided to “take additional measures” and agree not to use the “honor or the honours which have been conferred upon” him.
But he also employed the announcement to emphatically denying – as he has always done – the accusations of sexual impropriety leveled at him; even though having paid out millions to settle the civil sexual assault case filed by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and firmly denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
There has been ongoing scrutiny toward the royal institution regarding the claims against Andrew – especially since his ill-fated television appearance with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He presently states he is acting to safeguard his relatives from further damage resulting from media scrutiny.
Has the King Stripped Him of His Titles?

Why Hasn’t He Formally Stripped of His Entire Honors?
To forcibly remove a dukedom would take legislative action, and would constitute such a historic move publicly before the public – it has not occurred to a high-ranking royal in over a century – that it would likely cause more reputational damage for the royals.
The prince remains still a prince. At his birth in 1960, he was automatically as the child of the sovereign. This would only be changed if a royal decree was enacted by the reigning monarch.

The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic has also said the move is “insufficient and delayed”, adding: “Andrew remains facing allegations of sexual misconduct and misuse of position. He ought to be divested of every honor and his navy rank and should face a legal probe. Refraining from using archaic honors is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
