Three Lions Coach Shares The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.
A decade ago, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Currently, he's dedicated to assist the head coach win the World Cup in the upcoming tournament. The road from athlete to trainer began with a voluntary role for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his calling.
Staggering Ascent
His advancement stands out. Commencing with his first major job, he developed a reputation with creative training and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs led him to top European clubs, and he held international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include big names such as Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the top according to him.
“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, each day, each phase?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a structured plan so we can for optimal success.”
Obsession with Details
Passion, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Working every hour all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies include mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and fostering teamwork. The coach highlights the national team spirit and avoids language including "pause".
“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”
Greedy Coaches
He characterizes himself and the head coach as “very greedy”. “We want to dominate all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the entire field and that's our focus many of our days on. We must to not only anticipate with developments and to lead and innovate. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“We have 50 days together with the team before the World Cup finals. We must implement a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear during that time. It's about moving it from thought to data to knowledge to execution.
“To develop a process enabling productivity during the limited time, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have from when we started. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”
World Cup Qualifiers
The coach is focusing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and in Albania. The team has secured a spot in the tournament after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach must reflect all the positives from the top division,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the flexibility, the strength, the integrity. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.
“To make it light, we have to give them a system that lets them to operate as they do in club games, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and more in doing.
“There are emotional wins you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – building from the defense, pressing from the front. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, especially in England's top flight. Everybody has so much information now. They know how to set up – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to increase tempo through midfield.”
Thirst for Improvement
The coach's thirst for development is all-consuming. During his education for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, since his group contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he entered difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton locally, where he also took inmates during an exercise.
He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays – became a published work. Frank was one of those won over and he brought Barry as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the team dismissed most of his staff except Barry.
The next manager at Chelsea was Tuchel, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body view them as a partnership akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
