The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named 6-7 Pardoned by Miami-Dade Mayor.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
