Lifetime of Earnings Not Enough for UK Employees to Become Part of Richest 10%, Study Says

Per fresh research, the average earner in the UK would require over five decades of earnings to reach the wealth level of the richest 10% of the population.

Expanding Financial Divide Through the Years

The analysis reviewed financial assets statistics including the recent health crisis years and found that in 2006-08, it would have taken nearly four decades of median full-time earnings to join the top 10th of the economic ladder.

A senior economist involved with the analysis observed: "Wealth gaps in Britain are currently so significant that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary across their entire working life would continue to be incapable to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Wealth Divide

The analysis found that the gap between the assets of the average person and an individual in the richest segment was £1 million in 2006-08, but had expanded to £1.3 million in real terms by recent times.

The economist continued: "These differences are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is limited – individuals who begin life wealthy tend to stay wealthy, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the wealth gap widening in specific figures, the portion of complete net worth in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s," per the analysis.

Throughout these years, complete net worth in the UK increased dramatically from triple the annual GDP, to approximately 7.5x.

Factors of Financial Divide

So-called "passive" gains, by means of increasing property values and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the key contributors of the growing financial disparity since 2010, per the study.

These appreciations typically went to senior citizens with real estate, the research shows – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Intergenerational Economic Gaps

The average wealth gap between individuals aged 30-34 and those in their early 60s grew by more than 100% in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Geographic Variations

There were also stark regional variations, with the median value of assets in the pandemic period amounting to 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where property prices have typically increased quickly, versus £110,000 in the northeastern region.

Health Crisis Years Effects

During the pandemic, when countless laborers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate numerous families were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

Higher-income households fared much better, however. "The average household in the bottom income bracket saw their liquid savings grow by only eighty pounds throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. Conversely, the typical family in the top income bracket saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
