Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.
He commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward tracking their development".
Summers, who formerly headed the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages showed that the official exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In additional comments, the AI firm expressed it understood Summers' determination to resign.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the Board," OpenAI stated.
Legislative Background
This development follows after the entire Congress of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would require the US justice department to make public its records on Epstein.
The legislation will afterward move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he plans to endorse the legislation, after reversing his stance on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Email Contents
A collection of financier-linked emails disclosed by the House Oversight Committee days ago referenced multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The messages showed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often seeking to connect Summers to influential international personalities.
Personal Response
After the correspondence were made available with the public, Summers said he assumed "full responsibility for my misguided choice to continue corresponding with Mr Epstein".
He added that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and mend bonds with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over Harvard from five years and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments previously on this week, he said he would maintain his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that he was ceased to be connected with the institution.
Summers entered the board of the AI company, which creates the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
