Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three officers killed served in the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and one more individual who ran away subsequent to the incident was located not long after. The trio have been transported to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area revealed the property left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents triggered the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander informed the media.

A propane tank had been set off, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a level above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he said officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to local news, noting that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the service of their country.
