A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind assisted us locate the footage.
We are analyzing video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
