Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after the ex-president charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Message That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly served in armed forces or security capacities.
"As we did, you all took an vow to defend and defend this constitution," the lawmakers declared in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our constitution are not only from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse unlawful commands, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that break the legal system or our founding principles."
The Former President's Incensed Reply
The clip reportedly trigger a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, House Democratic leader issued a joint declaration condemning the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our United States with tremendous patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the protection of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and retract his violent discourse before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Lawmakers' Defiant Answer
The officials who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who love this nation and swore an pledge to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment continues forever, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the law," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they execute their vow to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must join forces and condemn the ex-president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the capital punishment of government members."
He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising troops to ignore directives, I think that is historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources informed journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and determine all that."
Administration Reaction
During a administration briefing on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "No."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson said. "We see current representatives of the federal government who conspired to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our military depends on the hierarchy, and if that system is broken, it can result in casualties, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
