Bluefin Tuna Sells for Unprecedented Bid of $3.2m at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; ÂŁ2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The top offer for the 535-pound fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages restaurants across the country and overseas.
"The year's tuna signals fortune," stated the company president, a regular participant at the traditional first sale.
Known as the Tuna King, this businessman is famous for making substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
After the auction, the successful bidder admitted to the press that he was "astonished at the winning bid," noting, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."
This most recent acquisition exceeds his own record purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to surpass his own record yet again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which indicated the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.
The intense activity at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants soon after the auction concluded.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a positive way after tasting something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one elated diner.
