No less than 64 people were killed in a police operation cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's past.

Four police officers lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of AlemĂŁo and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 people were arrested.

Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials said.

The United Nations human rights body expressed being "horrified" by the police operation, calling for "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of a major organised crime groups.

Government representatives confirmed no less than 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Local Reaction

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the raid, together with dozens of firearms.
