‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s road from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic
Thehe initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta competed in the UK, an 18-year-old playing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he hit the target. The second time he played in British turf, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. Another occasion, against Manchester City six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. As he revisited to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, also. “Actually,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest in my career.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the attacker says, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about Man United, the usual talk. I have no idea if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the facility, the city, the day’s first practice is set to begin; after it, the short journey to the airport and another flight to England, this time to take on the Magpies in the UCL on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. This is proving a difficult season for Athletic, due in part to the pressures of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, take in the big picture, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and a sense of thankful reflection about him.
In the three years since he had returned to the club, Gorka has been a semi-final participant, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in four decades. He’s now the top goal-getter in the European competition, where they are unique and returning after absence in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he says.
The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that produced the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his top-level debut in that summer, he went through a torn cruciate, being released, a demotion and a recall before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“You go into the academy doubting you’ll make the senior squad but each step you progress through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You get there but … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I tear my cruciate.
“A massive setback but In retrospect as something positive because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it helps. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. In the facility, all resources are available, so utilize it all. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players countless occasions. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”
Game time is essential. He left in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in 2020-21, he got three strikes in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the following period, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and when eventually they need someone for your role, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Especially after the previous season which, sometimes, was involved suffering. From top scorer with 16 in 2023-24, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
